An admitted latecomer to the P-Funk party, somebody played the 12” of Funkadelic’s “One Nation Under A Groove” at an afterskool dance in the 7th grade. The most authoritative guitar solo I had ever heard at that young age shredded the melody of the song.

The following fall came the long version of “(not just) Knee Deep”, again the latter part of the jam just destroyed by this amazing axe molester who just killed the melody and took the song to another whole level. I have not been the same since.

My life became one long quest for all the old Funkadelic albums preceding One Nation and in the process discovering the metallic magic of one Michael “Kidd Funkadelic” Hampton. Most of us know the tale by now. George Clinton and the P-Funk crew heard this young virtuoso tearing up Eddie Hazel’s magnum-opus “Maggot Brain” note-for-note at a party one night, the rest is history.

Hampton made his vinyl debut on the Funkadelic masterstroke of 1975, “Let’s Take it to the Stage” at a tender teen age and believe me he has been doing just that ever since. Approaching the craft with the humility of pure genius, he damn near single-handedly propelled the Funkadelic rock ethic to stankified heights throughout the mid to late 70s.

Here, the self-proclaimed ‘guitar God for a band he cannot escape’, pilots a tight troupe of musicians thru a crisp arrangement of several P-Funk master titles. Steve Boyd lays down the vocals in the tradition of Glen Goins, fellow P-Funk axe men Blackbyrd McKnight & Ronkat Spearman join the festivities as the ‘Funk Gets Stronger”.

The main thang here is that Hampton gets to really stretch out, unlike his sporadic blasts of sonic overload heard during any George Clinton concert, he really gets to go on to the stratosphere here. That’s gotta be refreshing for someone who has played the same arrangement of Maggot Brain for what must be the millionth time for GC.

He includes at least one track from his much slept on solo cd from a few years back as well. It’s about time one of the greatest rock guitarists of our time got his chops and props. He sounds like he’s having the time of his life too.
