Although the multi-headed funk monster Slave saw their hey-day from the mid-to -late-70's on into the early 80s, it’s “Fearless Leader” the bass-thumpin’ , trumpet-blowin’ Steve Washington was busy culling ex-bandmates like Drac and his newly found love-interest/future spouse, P.Funk’s Sheila Horne Washington to throw down in the studio the most overlooked dance funk project of the era. Civil Attack. Sheila’s vocals are just slicing thru this wall of big beat 80s sound.

Much fatter sound and sexier approach than contemporaries Starpoint, One Way, or Atlantic Starr or, for that matter, a lot of the 80s-synth funk to come out of Minneapolis, or even Washington’s own work with Clinton (Fries Go W/ That Shake, Hey Good Lookin’, Jimmy G, INC Thang Band) & his own Aurra . More funky, melodic and organic.
“Sex, drugs & rock & roll have blown her mind” she sings on Not Guilty. Free form. And with Sheila laying it down (raw and ready like only she can) over The Fearless Leader’s bass thumps and earth-quaking dance-floor scorching makes this one of the best dance records that year.
Tracks like “No Pain, No Gain” smolder on towards the 6 minute mark with a blistering 80s guitar assault. And be sure to check the intro of “One Love”; yes, yes, Drac is back, again, hey, news flash, he must be the comeback king!! This one even smolders to a P tribute of ‘gaagaagoogaa’ with Sheila singing ‘has anybody seen GC, tell him to call me’.
And the Fearless Leader, well, you know the bass style, just a surplusage of bottom on the downstroke and this enormous Ohio THUMP on the pop. Grooves like “Plug It In” all pulsate, erotically around this stroke. Although known primarily as a bassist, horn man and writer, Steve’s synth licks ain’t no joke either.
A year before groups like Tony Toni Tone ushered in a new era of modern dance music, these funk pioneers were busy at work in the funk lab bringing some much needed old skool groove in with the 80s flow.
