How many muggs can say they one, laid down the bass on JB’s “Sex Machine”. Two, played the drums on Funkadelic’s “(not just) Knee Deep” and Parliament’s “Flashlight”. And three, posted P-Funk’s first number one album 40 years ago with “Ahh.. The Name Is Bootsy, Baby”. Would you expect anything other than a complete throw down from the #1 Funkateer of all time? Well alright then, because that is exactly what this here is.

Casper says this time around, he wanted to do the album of a somewhat different formula. If he don’t start no funk, there won’t be none. So he’s keeping the groove eternal by sharing it with the young bloods. World Wide Funk, his first offering since 2011’s excellent Funk Capital, is the apex where all musical flavors meet in a spiraling swirl of incandescent glowing funk embers. As Big Daddy Kane suggests over “Hot Saucer”, one of the albums most accessible tracks, the tasty R&B flavored, radio-friendly essence melts on your palate.

As per usual, Boomanchu has assembled a veritable funk army of tight talented soldiers. Remarkably this set never sounds cluttered or over-produced. In the presence of Bootsy’s all encompassing spiritual vibe, the numerous “guests” on the record (and this is an all-star effort) don’t come off like, well, guests. They are part of a Funk whole, The One indeed, an extended funk family.

Gorgeous package all the way around from the master funkster. Rich album artwork and organically produced, chunky beats of consciousness infused eye-openers permeate and percolate throughout. Check the thought-provoking, metaphysically infused jams “Pusherman” and “Thera-P”. Record has been on the platter since last week, heavy rotation over here for sure. Yet, I am just starting to digest the thick polyrhythmic layers of some of these crunchers.

The bright, bouncy grooves are highly energetic and infectious. Some may have wanted a darker and harder sounding record from the Funkadelic side of thangs. Fair enough, if I run into him here in the ‘Natti, I’ll request a follow-up to Zillatron for ya. Hey that’s actually not a bad idea by no means. However, it is difficult to front on tracks like the pounding, irresistible “Bass-Rigged-System”. A dream thumpasauric collaboration of endless bottom that is almost too damn good to be true.

Slick funk that’s simultaneously polished and snasty too. They straight kill it. Simply groove out to electro-funk jams like “Snow Bunny”, the up the country twang of “Boomerang” and the sweet, sugary drippings of “Candy Coated Lover”. And believe me, it don’t get much darker and harder than “Illusions”, a slamming album closer examining both the dis-United State of American mindset and the demons responsible for it. Chuck D slays these devils as Buckethead waves the funkadelic flag high and slays some incredible axe licks.

And what is a Bootsy record without some spiritual and saucy balladry? Cue “Heaven Yes” featuring Bone Cooper and Snoop Dogg’s lasciviously freaky “Hi-On-Heels”. Herein you’ll also some inspired contributions of funk from a female puuuuuurspective (as the Queen Mallia used to say) making this album a true “Ladies Nite” affair.

So, welcome to Captain P-Mo’s orbit, circa 2017. Maybe The Dr will be inspired enough to finally put that Parliament album he’s been promoting forever out. Bootsy’s finest hour, perhaps not. I’ll save that moniker for the aforementioned “Ahh The Name Is”. But you still have to deal with the fact. 40-odd plus years along the way and here is a veritable wall-to-wall Space Bass’d, mutroned-out bumpathon of epic proportions. He always brings the funk. Did you expect anything less?
