QUINCY JONES - ULTIMATE COLLECTION

QUINCY JONES - ULTIMATE COLLECTION Jones, Quincy: Ultimate Collection Before his name became a household word, Chicago’s Quincy Delight Jones Jr. (born March 14, 1933) was a musician’s musician. He came up during the ’40s and ’50s when players aspired to be great, not rich and famous. With trumpet as his primary axe, Quincy played in social bands in the evenings and juke joint jazz bands after hours, soaking up knowledge from every musical situation. He studied on scholarship at Boston’s Berklee School of Music but left in under a year to hit the road with Lionel Hampton’s band, soon becoming an in-demand arranger in New York. He was the musical director for Dizzy Gillespie’s historic State Department tour of Europe, the Middle East and South America. The following year, he sojourned to Paris to study orchestration with Nadia Boulanger and became an A&R man for France’s Barclay Disques. His most harrowing gig was as MD for a European tour of the Harold Arlen musical Free and Easy, where the show closed and he was stranded, responsible for all of the musicians. Q survived the catastrophe to later become the first African American Vice President of a major record company (Mercury Records), recording his own albums there as well.
