It was 1981, and I was 12 years old, high on my recent discovery of the glories of punk and “new wave.” If some guy in a porkpie hat and unspeakably cool suit was going to issue commands regarding my viewing pleasures, who was I to argue? And so it came to pass that I watched my first Madness video, which consisted largely of wacky dancing, crunchy sax riffs, and the guy in the shades periodically yelling “One Step Beyond!” By the end of the song, I was no longer sitting. I was on my feet, sunglasses on face, skanking across the living room for the very first time.
