JOHNNY GILL - ULTIMATE COLLECTION There was always something grown about Johnny Gill. Solid. Less a kid than a man. I remember meeting him while he was in the midst of doing press for the 1996 New Edition reunion. The other members of the group were rocking ‘wife-beater’ shirts, team jerseys, supersized shorts and hot kicks. Typical fly and famous gear. Not Johnny. He showed up in a three-piece linen suit and expensive leather loafers. Dressed to go to work. To get down to business. Grown. Mature. Of course Johnny just didn’t dress grown, he sounded that way, too. It was evident from the very beginning. Even though Johnny was all but 16 when he recorded his self-titled 1983 solo debut, he already had the vocal heft of a singer twice his age. It probably explains why this high school student could get away with covering Sam & Dave’s ballad ”When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.” A grown ass song. Listen to “Perfect Combination,” his chart-topping duet with Stacy Lattisaw. The song celebrates that innocent bliss of first and (one would assume) chaste love, and the two teens give it their all; except it’s hard not to notice that while Stacy sounds somewhat girlish, Johnny, while no less appealing, comes off a bit more… Hmm. Experienced. Even then Johnny Gill could make adult women sigh because, despite his age, he had the heart of a loveman. And the skills.
