Starting in the late 1960s, Kool & The Gang crafted a unique musical concoction that was equally complex, polyrhythmic, intelligent and fat ’n’ funky, a sound that kept them in the top of the charts for much of the 1970s. As the decade drew to a close, disco – funk’s soul-inspired underground sibling – emerged as the Next Big Thing. A thumping four-four beat, mind-altering string and synthesizer flourishes, and promises of good drugs and better orgasms kicked The Gang’s jazz-founded multi-layered funk to the curb. Down but not out, The Gang did what many artists attempt yet rarely succeed at: They tore the whole thing down and reinvented themselves. First to go was their approach to composing and arranging. Gone were tightly interwoven jazz/funk tapestries that were their trademark; in their place were wonderfully simple pop R&B gems. But their jazz schooling served them well, for don’t let the music’s simplicity fool you – anyone can write a simple song, it takes great talent to craft a good simple song.
