THE DRAMATICS - Greatest Love Songs Vol#2 : CD

THE DRAMATICS - Greatest Love Songs Vol#2 Drivin N Cryin: Ultimate Collection They’re an American band. But despite what that sense of entitlement does for most acts, drivin n cryin has spent much of its 15 years redefining what that statement really means. It means an overt blue-collar sensibility and the work history to match; a group so respected for its work ethic and sheer integrity that it sustained the same sizeable following as it weathered a rollercoaster of disparate achievements; a southern band as prideful of its heritage as it is unwilling to exploit it. And if you’re from Atlanta, it means even more. The southern cradle that produced drivin n cryin was already well in the throes of nationwide recognition by 1985. R.E.M. had emerged from nearby Athens as alt-rock’s great white hope and the progenitors of the nouveau Georgia sound, while mainstays The B-52’s were only a couple records shy of breaking it all wide open themselves. The scene was rich in the sort of folk tradition that once defined the Old South, and it attracted Kevn Kinney. Emigrating from Milwaukee, Kinney took a day job with a sewage treatment plant and spent his evenings playing Atlanta’s folk circuit, where he met bassist Tim Nielsen and drummer Paul Lenz. It wasn’t long before ex-punk rocker Kinney was able to lure the talented rhythm section away from their own punk outfit, The Nightporters. Once cemented, the trio took to the task of fleshing out material that Kevn had been demoing with local producer Frank French. The new ensemble christened itself after one of the songs that best exemplified the music’s split-personality.
