CHER - ESSENTIAL COLLECTION Cher: Essential Collection 3145854992 How many people on the face of this earth are so famous they need only go by their first name? (By the way, Sting and Liberace aren’t first names!) Elvis and Dolly are among the few that come to mind. And then there’s Cher. She’s always been just Cher and that short, one-syllable name has been synonymous with a myriad of images, memories, snapshots—truly indelible—Cher, one half of the duo Sonny &, Cher the solo artist, Cher the fashion trendsetter, Cher the actress, Cher the outrageous personality, Cher the entertainer—a true stylist in every sense of the word. And just as her name is unquestionably identifiable, so is the voice. As soon as the first vocal on Essential Collection is heard, you enter a world of her powerful essence—the sonic depth of her voice, the passionate delivery—that undeniable Cher voice that is lush, character filled, sensual and commanding. You can almost see the twinkle in her eyes, sense her laughter in such sentiments as “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),” or feel the pain in “You Better Sit Down Kids.” There is only one Cher, and it’s clear the instant this CD opens with Bob Dylan’s “All I Really Want To Do.” That song was Sonny’s suggestion. The public wasn’t completely convinced that both the high and low parts were executed by Cher, as they were accustomed to hearing such arrangements shared by the duo. But according to Cher’s autobiography, The First Time, the high part wasn’t terribly high, but the low part reached the “absolute bottom” of her range. There were no overdubs; she simply switched back and forth between ranges, recording live. They weren’t aware that the Byrds, coming off their big hit “Mr. Tambourine Man,” were in the midst of recording the same song as well, but even though the group’s version came out first, Cher’s single went considerably higher on the charts. Not long after the song was released, Cher and Sonny happened to be in a New York recording studio, when Cher crossed paths with Dylan. It was the first time they had met and Cher was blown away when he told her he liked what she had done with his song.
