AtlanticStarr:Ultimate Collection

Formed by the White Plains, New York-based songwriting Lewis brothers – David on guitar and vocals; Wayne on keyboards and vocals, and Jonathan on keyboards and trombone – with neighborhood friend and drummer Porter Carroll, the first edition of Atlantic Starr, which included lead vocalist Sharon Bryant, bassist Clifford Archer, saxophonist Koran Daniels, flutist/percussionist Joseph Phillips and trumpeter William Sudderth, was just short of a small tribe. So what if the Lewises were well known in and around their region; with most of the great music of the day coming out of places like Detroit, Philly, Ohio and Down South, out in L.A., the music industry at large was just a little suspicious of a band from...White Plains? Thank God somebody knew better at A&M Records, the artist-friendly L.A.-based label run by Herb Alpert (of ’60s’ Tijuana Brass fame) and partner Jerry Moss. While the label was home to such black artists as Billy Preston (“Outa-Space,” “Will It Go ’Round In Circles,” “Nothin’ From Nothin’”) and respected producer/arranger Quincy Jones (who, in addition to his own records, produced for the label R&B/funk act the Brothers Johnson), arguably, Preston and Jones represented pop/rock and jazz respectively, and A&M wanted to be in the R&B business proper. When an Atlantic Starr demo tape found its way onto the label’s Hollywood lot, the group found itself with a recording contract.
