* Imagine if Shuggie Otis has made some more albums?
* Imagine if Al Green had been in a Funk Band?
* Imagine if Sly Stone had made some more albums?
* Imagine if D'Angelo didn't cuss?
* Imagine if Prince hadn't lost touch with his audience?
* Imagine if Jimi Hendrix had been popular with Black folks?
* Imagine if Ice Cube could play the guitar?

Well you don't have to imagine any of this, cuz all you have to do is listen to "URBAN MISFIT" - SONNY BOY experience the reality of this...
Back in 1998 I wrote the following in response to a question that I have been unable to answer for over 30 years...
"FUNK = Blues + Rock n' Roll + Soul + Jazz with a little gospel, reggae, hip hop & latin (thrown in for a little spice)"
Now I don't pretend for one moment to actually know what the definition of FUNK is. It's probably even more foolish to be so naive to try and boil the definition of it down to a mathematical expression? Nevertheless, regardless of how foolish that equation may read 4 years later, that is what I wrote back in 1998.
However as I have been listening to the new CD: "URBAN MISFIT" - SONNY BOY (pretty much non stop over the course of the past week)
I find myself drawn back to this mathematical expression that I wrote down back in 1998. Thats because this CD actually fits the intent of that description Let me put it to you like this....

* Did You Like: "Riot" - Sly and the Family Stone? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: "Rainbow Bridge" - Jimi Hendrix? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: "Will It Go Round In Circles" - Billy Preston? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: "Crystal Ball" - Prince? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: "Inspiration Information" - Shuggie Otis? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: "Pandamonium" - Time? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
Now before you get to thinking that this CD is simply a "rehash of some old concepts"....
* Did You Like: "Brown Sugar" - D'Angelo? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: Tony, Toni, Tone? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
* Did You Like: Erykah Badu? (then you will dig "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
(so think again!!!!!)

Much like some other CD's that I have reviewed over the past few years, this is a CD of MODERN FUNK FOR THE NEW CENTURY.... (some may be tempted to call it "neo soul")
If I were a "rock critic", then I might be tempted to call this CD something like...
"an introspective album by a modern day urban poet covering the emotions from joy to pain with an intensity that combines the key elements of black music of the past 50 years from bebop to hip hop and everything in between..."
However, since I am NOT a "rock critic", I will leave those type of descriptions to the writers over at Rolling Stone, Spin, etc... (if they can be bothered with listening to "Urban Misfit" - Sonny Boy)
Instead, I'll simply call it FUNK (cuz I know that yall will know what I'm talkin bout)
The topics covered in this 14 song masterpiece are: Male female relationships, unemployment, drugs, money, dancing, slavery, gangbangin, blaxploitation movies, fried chicken, cheating, collard greens (and other important stuff)

"FUNK = Blues + Rock n' Roll + Soul + Jazz with a little gospel, reggae, hip hop & latin (thrown in for a little spice)"
Hindsight is a "20/20 kinda thang" However, that definition is looking pretty good to me right about now....
"I'm a SOUL JUNKY, tryin ta keep it FUNKY..." -- Sonny Boy
