The Ohio Funk legend is back with another slice of lean hard funk jams for the oh-10. Here he continues to incorporate all of those saucy elements that made the Ohio funk movement as special as it was some 35-40 years ago when bands like Slave and the Ohio Players ruled the chart.

As comfortable in the studio as he is on stage during a blistering Slave guitar assault, Drac is one of the only ones still standing and making relevant music 10 years deep into the millennium. Like a ghost from an age by-gone when thousands of funkateers (yours truly included) got funked-up on such club foot-stompers like “Stone Jam”, “Party Lights” as well as perennial black radio favorites like Aurra’s “Are You Single”, of which Drac re-imagines for the set’s smoking opener.

The Aurra vibe was a combination of smoove organ and synth licks over sexy female backing vocals. But in Drac’s world shreds of another of his scorching trademark axe solos that have become the bedrock of his neo-funk Midwest sound groove so melodically over the latter half of the thick, dense jam.

Few do it better on the improv tip and Drac has long been one of the underrated rock/funk axe men in pop music. So it comes as no surprise that he is showing some incredible rock chops here as he solos over pounding bass beats. Make that axe talk brotha’ make it talk!!

Drac is back, but his sensibilities have grown even more with each successive resurrection. He incorporates some tight old skool hip-hop angles into the joyous party mix on cuts like “Sticki”. And considering the played-out stale state of both current rap and R&B these days this comes off as quite a refresher. Back to the future. He pays homage to GC’s Atomic Dog over a hard vampy rhythm guitar lick(“Tha Dawg”).

Drac also shows some smooth rap chops here as well as a variety of vocal creativity with use of various vocoders and talk box. Many have attempted to reproduce and imitate the Slave sound and no Drac project is really complete without a revisit to that original groove. He is the originator and no one does it better on “Ride”. The Drac formula is simple: no pretense old skool house party music perfectly executed and succinctly laid down done by one of the masters of the genre.
