First off, these ladies of the P are just great singers, excellent performers. On this, the second incarnation of Brides, the lush sexy sounds of original funky Bride Dawn Silva (Lynn Mabry had departed at this point) are paired with the powerhouse vocal vibes of ex-Bridesmaids Sheila Horne and Jeanette McGruder (a former jazz violinist who once gigged w/ Earl Klugh). I remember when the vinyl was first issued just into 1980.

Everybody coming to funk skool was talking about this massive 15-minute chunk of funk that comprised the title track ( a heavily edited version of the song had just scratched the Black Singles chart). We pretty much figured Jeff "Cherokee" Bunn was poppin’ that bass, but indeed, one of the great mysteries in P-Funkdom is just who ground out that smoldering guitar solo. I saw them tour in support of this album and I must say The Brides backing band was just as white hot as they were!! (well in a different way. Know what I’m sayin’ 2-U).

Other musicians featured on the set Rolling Stone magazine dubs as one of the coolest records of all time include Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, Bootsy , Gary Shider, Mike Hampton, Blackbyrd McKnight, Jessica Cleaves, Dennis Chambers, Fred Wesley and several other various key members of the P-Funk Mob. The sound is rockier, edgier than the first LP, Funk or Walk. Has some more elements in it. Some classical strings, more Bootsy bass & guitar that really funks up "Smoke Signals" , Collins lone contribution to the effort.

Sheila "One more twitchin’ in the kitchen" Horne just takes that thang to another level, ‘tha’ mutha is hot, tha’ mutha is buuurrnnninnn’. And in a move that even Ella would sit up and have to take note she also lets her scat-flag fly high on the title track. Rodney "Skeet " Curtis’ rumbling roiling bass licks on "Party Up In Here", which by the woo became one of Uncle Jam’s favorite concert chants. I like the way this was recorded too, with the vocals way up in the mix, sounds like they are sitting right next to you on personal tracks like "Mother May I" and "Didn’t Mean to Fall In love". These girls want to see your booty wiggle. This is a mighty cool record spotlighting a unique and distinctive vocal trio in its prime.
