Funk is 3 parts fun, and its evident they had a lot of it cutting this album. Gimmie that foot. Just the bass and the cymbal. Throw a bubbling clavinet, grinding organ and some funky horns in the gyrating gumbo and ad a snap of wah-wah guitar and some throbbing bass. And then the hilarious riotous( not only funky but funny) Kevin Goins, “if I wanna eat Cat, I’ll go to a Chinese restaurant” he sings on “Freak of My Dreams”. On most of the tracks the band just gets in this voracious pocket and then proceeds to wreck all rationale with a ferocious poly-rhythmic boil. And then Goins weaves his magic on vocals and guitar.

Don’t mean to get all deep on a mug but this latest set from the band of British funkateers cuts a groove so low you can’t get under it. Apparently Kevin flew over the big pond last year for a 2 week stay of extended jamming ( and beer drinking). I think they have been hangin’ in Plainfield, NJ too. Laying down some of the grittiest, stankiest , most organic potent brew of fonk-N this side of his fun(k) with Quasar, General Kane and the legendary Space Cadets. The resulting free form sessions comprise the remarkable From the Hood to the Wood. Britain has always had a much higher level of respect for soul and funk music and this pairing is a proverbial match made in funk heaven. The record has turned out to be a funk monster.
Its just plain stanky. They are laying it down like muggs used to do. Earthy, with gusto and gumbo. Seasoned and saucy. Unafraid to push the pulsating grooves straight into your earhole thru 18 stouthearted tunes impregnating the senses with lustrous funkiness. Kevin’s voice is sooo full of unbridled , ungirded soul. And P Theory’s musicianship is soooo animating and stimulating. A veritable orgy of funkadelic sound and attitude. The songs pulsate with a spicy, intoxication and abandon. Don’t take my word for it, check out the smoldering “She’s the Owner of the Property”.
This is some innovative pounding, towering funk. No pretense or plasticity as Goins is heard saying in the mix “white boys can jump” and “y’all are some funky boys”. No over dubs or tricky studio wizardry, just a damn good time being had by all. This is not some recycled funk either, there is not one P-funk loop on the cd. Instead it’s the hard cutting attitude.
Goins drops wisdom( ‘learn how to laugh it’ll take away the pain’) as well as wit. The band ( Alex, Graham, Wiggles, Funkentelechy, Gerraint and Jake) is hi-octane and can scorch a ballad as well (check out “A Promise is Not To Be Broken”), indeed Philly only wishes it could still be this soulful. Lord knows I could write a full review on each track. Check out these sound bites, I dare you to say this isn’t the funk, the whole uncut funk and nothing but the funk.
